Long-Serving Firefighter, Teacher From Northern Westchester Dies

A firefighter and teacher from Northern Westchester who served his department for more than 50 years has died.

Fred Whipple, a long-serving member of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department, has died.

Somers resident Fred Whipple, who served the Somers Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, died on Sunday, March 19, the department announced.

Since joining the department in 1965, Whipple became known by many for his great personality and he eventually became the "true senior man" at the firehouse, lending his knowledge and experience to many younger members, according to the fire department.

Whipple was also known for his courage, which he exhibited in 1968 when he entered a confined space at great risk to himself and rescued three people who had been overcome with fumes.

In addition to his work as a hero with the fire department, Whipple was also a school teacher in Somers for 25 years.

"He has undoubtedly touched so many lives," the department said on social media.

Whipple leaves behind his wife, Loretta.
